I am excited to start a new year of exploring science with your kids at Kirk O’ the Valley. I have always had a passion for science and discovering the world around me. I am thrilled to be able to share my passion with your children. I studied zoology and worked with marine mammals before becoming a high school teacher. As my kids started to grow my love for elementary science grew with them. Not only did my four kids attend preschool here but I remember being a little one in room four as well.
This year I will break the school year into three basic categories; physical, earth and life science. In physical science we will cover properties of matter, the periodic table, energy, magnets, light and sound. Earth science will consist of basic landforms and plate tectonics, rocks, fossils, natural resources, weather, seasons and the solar system. Life science will cover the classification and characteristics of plants and animals, habitats, food webs, adaptations, cells and human anatomy. Each grade will have slightly different emphasis with the idea that as the student progress through the grades they will get a deeper understanding of all the subjects.
Kindergarten through fifth grade will meet with me twice a week while preschool will see me once a week. While the students are with me I have several expectations for them to follow.
1. Respect each other and your teacher.
2. Listen carefully.
3. Follow directions.
4. Explore your surroundings and be a scientist.
I love the Kirk and I am looking forward to a new year. As my favorite science teacher Ms. Frizzle says, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy.” I hope this year we will do all of those things as your kids engage in new subjects.
